与定钳盘式制动器相反，浮钳盘式制动器的单侧液压缸结构不需要跨越制动盘的油道，故不仅轴向和径向尺寸较小，有可能布置得接近车轮轮毂，而且制动液受热汽化的机会较少。

轿车制动器已基本实现前盘后鼓的配置，甚至部分档次稍高的轿车已实现前后均为盘式制动。随着我国汽车工业的发展，国家标准对汽车制动性能的要求日益严格，在一些商用车上也开始出现前盘后鼓，甚至前盘后盘的配置。 GB7258-2012（2012年9月1日起实施）明确提出：专用校车和危险货物运输车的前轮及车长大于9m的其他客车的前轮应装备盘式制动器。

此外，浮钳盘式制动器在兼充行车和驻车制动器的情况下，不用加设驻车制动钳，只须在行车制动钳液压缸附近加装一些用以推动液压缸活塞的驻车制动机械传动零件即可。
